Attilio Alto
"Triplicemente rettore"

Attilio Alto è stato un importante ingegnere e docente barese.
Nel 1969 incominciò la propria carriera universitaria come assistente ordinario prima e docente incaricato poi. Nel 1980 divenne docente ordinario di Tecnologia dei Metalli presso la facoltà di Ingegneria dell'Università di Bari. L'anno successivo ottenne la direzione dell'Istituto di Tecnologie: incarico che mantenne fino al 1984, allorché venne eletto preside della Facoltà. Lo stesso anno, divenne anche direttore del Dipartimento di Progettazione e Produzione Industriale.
Dal 1986 al 1991 ha rivestito la carica di rettore dell'Università di Bari per poi diventare il primo rettore del Politecnico di Bari dal 1991 al 1994.
Fra i suoi meriti non bisogna dimenticare l'insistenza dimostrata per la realizzazione di una rete fra università, anche attraverso la nascita dei poli di ricerca decentrati di Taranto e Foggia, destinati a diventare dopo non molto delle università autonome.
Si dimise da rettore del Politecnico di Bari solo nel 1994, per assumere la stessa carica presso la neonata Università del San Marino. Dal 1992 fu anche socio e fondatore della Associazione Italiana di Tecnologia Meccanica (AITEM), che in breve divenne un centro di ricerca essenziale sui sistemi di produzione manifatturieri e in merito ai processi di trasformazione per le aziende, gli esperti del settore e le istituzioni inerenti.

Attilio Alto was an important engineer and teacher from Bari.
In 1969 he began his university career as a full assistant first and then as a professor in charge. In 1980 he became full professor of Metal Technology at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bari. The following year he obtained the direction of the Institute of Technologies: a position he held until 1984, when he was elected dean of the Faculty. The same year, he also became director of the Industrial Design and Manufacturing Department.
From 1986 to 1991 he held the position of rector of the University of Bari and then became the first rector of the Polytechnic of Bari from 1991 to 1994.
Among his merits we must not forget the insistence shown for the creation of a network between universities, also through the birth of the decentralized research centers of Taranto and Foggia, destined to become autonomous universities after a while.
He resigned as rector of the Polytechnic of Bari only in 1994, to assume the same position at the newly formed University of San Marino. From 1992 he was also a partner and founder of the Italian Association of Mechanical Technology (AITEM), which soon became an essential research center on manufacturing production systems and on transformation processes for companies, industry experts and related institutions.
